Rep. Vargas Statement on Biden Administration Expanding Health Care for DACA Recipients

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (CA-52) released the following statement after the Biden Administration answered calls to expand affordable, quality health care coverage to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients for the first time. Under the rule, around 100,000 Dreamers without health insurance will now be eligible to enroll in a qualified health plan through the federal insurance marketplace or become eligible for coverage through a basic health program.

“Dreamers are our neighbors, teachers, nurses, students, and family members. They should be able to access affordable health coverage in the only country they call home. I applaud the Biden Administration for taking this important step that will improve thousands of lives and provide Dreamers with the support they deserve,”  said Rep. Juan Vargas. “I’ll always stand up for Dreamers, and I’m not going to stop pushing for comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for the Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders, and farmworkers who enrich our economy and our communities.”

Last year, Rep. Vargas joined 79 Democrats in expressing support for the Biden Administration’s proposed rule to extend eligibility for ACA coverage to DACA recipients.

In 2022, Rep. Vargas joined 83 of his colleagues in calling on the Biden Administration to remove barriers that prevent DACA recipients from accessing affordable health insurance through the ACA marketplace.

Last year, Rep. Vargas introduced the Homeownership for Dreamers Act. This bill would ensure that DACA recipients are eligible for Federal Housing Administration home loans, home loans backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, and Rural Housing loans.
